Scarlet Street-Does Producing a Good Mag Justify Hatemongering?

Scarlet Street Magazine has been cited in The Years Best Horror/Fantasy Review for being a superb horror/mystery movie mag. And a superb mag it is. But does it deserve our support?

At the Scarlet Street forums, SS publisher Richard Valley goes on hateful, vindictive tirades against more people than I can keep track of. The level of his hate is, well, scary, and it's obvious his intent is to drive those he dislikes out of fandom and harm their careers.

Valley, an openly gay man, claims to be doing this in the name of "gay rights", a claim that I, as a gay man, find appalling.
Valley has gone on for years against certain people, repeatedly accusing them of "plotting against him", accusing them of homophobia, urging his readers to boycott them and their work. I actually contacted three of the people he has targeted in this manner --horror authors all. NOT ONE of them made any mention of his sexuality. All three said they were'nt interested in talking about him. One did say that he was the worst advocate for gay rights imaginable, and that she supported gay rights. One of his targets turned out to be gay! Is Valley fighting homophobia, or is he promoting hate for fun and profit?

This is not heresay, but on his website for all to see. Go to ScarletStreet.com, click SS Forums, then click Off Topic Kibbutzing, then click World of Fandom. There you will see documented Richard Valley's deep hatred of most of fandom and a big chunk of humanity in general. He feels that while he has every right to promote his hate, NO ONE has any right to defend themselves or refute him in any way.
Valley's comments along the thread include put downs of other mags and several highly respected horror writers, and even snide remarks about people's dress and physical attributes!!!

Scarlet Street is indeed a superb film publication, but does that justify Richard Valley's ugly behavior?

Might it not be time to say "enough" and stop buying his product until he modifies his behavior? If it's OK for him to urge boycotts against everyone else, why can't the favor be returned?

I should mention that Richard Valley's targets include noted horror film historian Tom Weaver, Lucy Chase Williams, author of The Complete Films of Vincent Price, and, most recently, Video Watchdog Magazine.

So does this looney tunes Valley deserve our support?
