Wes Craven is a hack that managed to make a couple good movies early in his career.

Come on, return - he's had at least two significant and highly influential horror/thriller in every decade since the 70's
Last House on the Left & The Hills Have Eyes - 70s Nightmare on Elm Street & Serpent and the Rainbow - 80's Scream trilogy - 90s and so far Red Eye in 00s he's great

Wes Craven is a thouroughly average director. To be fair, his films do often have quite original concepts. I just hate how uneducated people always talk about how he's "the king of horror" or whatever bullshit.

I find Craven really frustrating. I agree with those who say that he makes some really great movies - the original NoES, Red Eye, New Nightmare, etc. - and some good ones - Serpent and the Rainbow, Scream 1 - but there's a lot of bad stuff mixed in, too.
He's an interesting guy, though. I heard him interviewed on the radio a few years back about the fantasy/SF novel he wrote and was really impressed by his thoughtfulness and introspection. Here's hoping he comes up with more good movies in the future. Sam |
