February 10: Sean S. Cunningham talks new FRIDAY THE 13TH
New Line Cinema is moving forward with their FRIDAY THE 13TH remake (not a prequel or sequel, as reported elsewhere), with an eye to release their return to Camp Crystal Lake on Friday, October 13, 2006. Speaking exclusively to Fango, series creator and director of the original FRIDAY THE 13TH Sean S. Cunningham confirms, “New Line is aggressively pursuing a new film.” As for who is slated to take the directorial reins, Cunningham says, “I’m flattered that [New Line] is interested, but I’m not really involved, at least not at this point.” Speaking on the popularity of the FRIDAY THE 13TH series, the director, weighs in. “FRIDAY THE 13TH has been dependable blue-collar horror,” he says. “Jason is comfortable in his own skin, and the movies have been unapologetic. These elements taken together help explain its longevity.” Of course, Jason only had a bit part in the 1980 FRIDAY, leaving the carnage up to dear old Mom (Betsy Palmer). The redux will substantially expand on his character and backstory. |

from bloody-disgusting.com
"Last night it was finally reported that Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes will be producing the next installment of the Friday the 13th franchise. The only plot tease was that it will reveal some origin of Jason Voorhees- we've got more on that from a scooper we know and trust with our lives whom wishes to remain anonymous. Inside you'll find the official press release if you missed it, along with some exclusive goods on what could happen regarding the film... Although this picture is rumored to be a remake, we've been told it may be more of a "re-envisionment" of the series. From our anonymous scooper, we've were informed that Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes apparently WANTED to remake it but would said "let's do something different" instead. New Line was super cool with it. So the next 'Friday' more of an ULTIMATE FRIDAY THE 13th... if you know anything about the Marvel comics ULTIMATE series. Basically, the plan (which can still change) is takes place after part 1 and shows Jason killing and becoming the monster we know and love. Getting the potato sack mask and the hockey mask, etc..." So this would be along the lines of the 80s-90s Godzilla films - a movie that stands on the events of the first film but, for all intents and purposes, ignores the subsequent entries?!?!? I like this idea better than a straight remake, but I can see some folks getting very upset. Still, this is one viable way to turn the series back to straight horror without asking the viewer to accept much of the silliness of later entries." Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes shingle is coming aboard to produce the 11th outing in the sturdy "Friday the 13th" franchise for New Line. Studio's hoping to fast-track the project -- centered on the origins of the Jason Voorhees character -- so that the pic can be released three weeks before Halloween on Friday, Oct. 13. Bay will produce with Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. New Line's hired Mark Wheaton ("Son of the Morning Star") to pen the script. Studio prexy Toby Emmerich is overseeing along with execs Cale Boyter and Jeff Katz. The original "Friday the 13th" -- set at a reopened camp that had closed 20 years earlier -- took nearly $40 million in domestic grosses in 1980. That's still the best domestic performance in the series, although New Line's spinoff pic "Freddy Vs. Jason" was a solid success in 2003, with $82 million domestic. Platinum Dunes, which Bay launched in 2001 as a low-budget horror specialist, produced New Line's 2003 remake of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and its upcoming "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning." |

so a fri 13th prequel would be :
kids going to camp and no one gets hurt ... unless they're running too fast and fall down. a couple of councellors screwing in the woods when the kids are asleep .. a couple more puffing on some weed .. sounds scary .. |
