Anyone seen "Magic" ( 1978)?

Great psychological horror drama with Anthony Hopkins as a ventriloquist in need of a bigtime carreer heads out of citylife for a while to a lake resort where he meets up with his high school sweetheart as he starts to be in love with her again, but the dummy "Fats" wants to control his master to the brink of insanity.

A spooky, moody and atmsopheric movie with a great score by Jerry Goldsmith and terrific performances even by Burgess Merideth! this has been the source for those evil doll and toy flicks like "Child's Play", " Dolls", "Pinocchio's Revenge", "Making Contact ( a.k.a Joey)", " Puppet Master", "Saw" and so on! i most recommend this movie.

Coming to DVD on April 26th 2006 in a special edition!

The 'Twilight Zone' episode it was ripped from is actually better (plus 'Magic's ending sucks compared to the 'TZ' one) in my opinion. Of course Ann Margaret IS Ann Margaret... :D

Now that the remakes of "Amityville Horror", "Willard", 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Dawn of the Dead" are successful at the box-office! maybe it's time they outta do a remake of "Magic".

MGM/Sony and Dreamworks could collabrate on doing the film with either Marcus Naspiel (TCM remake), Alexandra Aja ( High Tension), Jean Pierre Jenut, David Lynch, Jonathan Demme or Gulliermo Del Toro ( Hellboy, Blade 2 and Cronos) as the director.

For the cast i think Ryan Rynolds or George Clooney should be Corky/Dummy's voice with Catherine Zeta Jones as Peggy and James Remar as Burgess Merideth's character Ben Greene.

So, do you think a remake would work or you can't fix something that isn't broke?

I liked both the Twilight Zone episode and Magic, and actually I like that Magic doesn't have the magorealistic elements of the episode. There are things to expect and love from the Twilight Zone, things to expect and love in spades in fact, but the things to love in a strong psychological thriller are all present in Magic. I think remaking it would be a massive mistake, though. The whole bloody cast is just plain irreplaceable. And oh, you neglected one of the film's greatest merits: William Goldman scripted it. And while screenwriters are considered by some to be only nominal parts of the creation of a film, this is a critical thing to miss. And, with a remake, somebody else is likely to be taking on the script. Somebody who is not William Goldman. If you've seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or the Princess Bride, imagine them in somebody else's hands, director, writer, the whole shebang. As well as lacking the sublime combination of whimsy and cynicism in Goldman's work, the casting would be glossied with today's stars and with source material like Goldman's how would that look? Imagine Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as Butch and Sundance or Johnny Depp as Wesley in a new Princess Bride. The old movie would have to square up against it's evil extradimensional soulpatched doppelganger a la Star Trek in the minds of a stupid and impressionable youth and all that would be left would be unsightly stains. All in all, too cerebral, too quirky, too fun and too heavy to be messed with. There can be only one William Goldman and only one of a Goldman scripted film.

well it was based on the segment "the ventriloquist's dummy" from the wonderful 1945 british portmanteau film "dead of night"
