The chills and thrills is the best in a horror movie. gore is also needed in a horror movie. if there is no gore I'll probably still like it as long as it was good and scary. some examples are amityville horror and poltergeist.

I don't think gore is important in real horror movies.
The most important thing about a horror movie is that it leaves you terrified about what might be under your bed, ready to jump through the window, in the bathroom etc. The sort of think that makes you sleep with the light on - just in case. |

the flow of suspense and the movies ability to build, the music, and most of all the characters. Horror clitches turn me off tho.

since I am a gorehound I need gore... BUT the mystery/suspense is okay as well, but to be honest I dont want to be guessing all the time during a movie...

Everything is balanced in the making of a horror film.
If the directing sucks, the movie won't be all that great. If the acting is bad, the movie will be cheesy. If the script is full of plot-holes, the movie won't make sense. If the music is corny, the film won't have a creepy atmosphere. If the lighting is off, the film will either be too bright or too dark and will change throughout the film, making it rather laughable. If the editing isn't done properly, some scenes will seem misplaced. If the special effects can't be done properly with the budget they have, then they shouldn't use that particular scene. Everyone holds an important part in a horror film. If I had to pick just one thing as the most important, I'd go with the script.

I think the lighting can be very important, to tell you the truth i had forgoten about the lighting until sham sham 04 brought it up! it can really screw up a movie when it is so dark you can't see what is going on!! i guess it saves money special effects!!

I agree with Sham that a good balance is needed. Characters are my must-have element though. If you have cardboard characters, I'm not going to take your movie seriously.

I agree with Ritualistic and Avenger/Sham Sham...
GORE is a must..but you can have a great making of a horror flick..great content..but you have to have actors that can present and bring it to the audience where everyone can get into it and enjoy it. Ive seen alot of flicks that would have been great but the actors fucked it all up...Then again Ive seen a couple where the content sucked monkey balls but the actors made it worth watching....
