The Creature Trilogy
Just finished watching the "Creature(from the Black Lagoon)" trilogy the other day.
The major thing that stuck out was how SAD the creature's story is. 9 times out of 10 he kills in SELF DEFENSE! These so-called scientists are horrible! It's crazy. These should have been the titles of the movies: "Scientists Invade the Black Lagoon" "Revenge of the Scientists" and "The Scientists Walk Among Us" Seriously. They drag this poor guy from his home, torture him, then turn him into a freak. And they're surprised when he fights back? You can really see the lack of caring/understanding of the environment in these movies. I guess the attitude in the fifties was "Nature? Who needs it?" At one point in the third movie a scientist's wife is on the deck of a boat shooting sharks with a rifle for fun! Instead of wanting to protect the creature and preserve his environment all they want to do is capture him "dead or alive" so they can exploit him. It's sad. Poor guy. Great movies though. The Creature(or Gillman) is still one of my all-time-favorite-monsters.:) Even though the scientists are the REAL monsters in these movies. Last edited by Red Dragon; 02-03-2005 at 09:25 PM. |

I like the Creature movies myself but I have yet to see the Creature walks amoung us. I think the actors who played the creature were Ben Chapman a swimmer Ricou Browning and Don Megowan. The guys who designed the Creature suit were Bud Westmore and Jack Kevan. The Creature from the Blacklagoon was Universals 1st horror movie that was filmed in 3D.

You need to see "Walks Among Us." That's the one where the creature is on land and has human skin. Of course this is all a result of the scientist's interference. It's also the movie that has the first "sane" scientist of the trilogy who realizes that the creature is only violent in self defense. The last 30 minutes of the film are filled with irony and the final scene is a tear-jerker for sure.

The first two films are excellent examples of 1950's monster movies. Great stories terriffic underwater photography and fine acting, originally shot in 3D. This is a true classic (and Julia Adams was Hot). The third film is a little to "Frankenstein-ish" but it's okay.
