Romero and the Dead Films

A long time fan of the Dead series .. (and the remakes) I just watched Day of the Dead last night for the 5th or 6th time (I'd been listening to the excellent soundtrack I bought on Ebay and it made me want to watch the film again)

Every time i see it I like it more ..
As a matter of fact, I'm starting to prefer it to - gasp - Dawn of the Dead.
I really like the Jamaican and the Irish guy ... i think their characters are better than the 2 leads in Dawn.
And the evil military guy - is fantastic.

Anyone else feel this way or can nothing beat Dawn for you guys ?

this sounds goofy but when he gets shot by Bud ...
this is one of the few performances where someone ACTUALLY acts like they've been shot ...
Instead of doing the 'indiana jones' running around like it was a spitball that hit you.

Always been a huge fan of Day of the Dead - many detractors claim it is too "shouty" and claustrophobic... but these are qualities that make the film work, especially after the shopping-mall setting of Dawn.

Rhodes is plain nasty, and the good guys are all likeable (apart from the noob who cracks up, but at least he loses his guts and gets his arm chopped off to cheer us up) so we really want them to escape at the end.

Dr Frankenstein's nurturing of Bud is always intriguing without descending into farce, and there is still room for one or two comedy moments in the film (the Irish dude is hilarious) without detracting from the terror.

The start is great - those sudden hands through the wall by the calendar are startling, and what about that alligator?

I saw that one a long time ago. I think some of the humans were more repulsive than the zombies. But the little lecture about how we should stop trying to figure out why the dead come back to life and just get back to "making babies" was absurd, smacking of new age anti-intellectual bullshit. Human beings use intelligence to solve problems; that's how we're able to survive. But anyway... those Florida gators would be living large if that ever happened in real life - they'd never run out of food.

Kemal,

I liked that speech ...
To me the guy was saying 'we're being spanked by god' for snooping where we shouldnt .. the advance of technology being our downfall.

Not a new idea but you can certainly see where their heads might be when they've begun to suspect that the world is completely taken over ..

Like the man says ... maybe its better to spark up a couple of fatties on a nice island, and start the human race over ...

Sort of a Walden thing - back to the earth...

I dont have a problem with technology myself but its pretty clear that we're well on our way to destroying the earth after the incredibly short timespan humans have been on the earth.

His point of view is tempting .... relax and smell the roses and all that ...

I shall say

In order of quality it goes:

1) Dawn
2)Night
3)Day

After you watch Day you think "not as good as Dawn" but you should brace yourself for obvious things like this. The orginals of TCM and Halloween will never be bettered. NOTLD has a good remake but I still prefer the orginal as I am sure most people would.

While Day is not as well done as Dawn (its a bit saturated with the gore and it is not placed very well I.E the gererals torso rip) it is a good laugh and provides you with that Asshole general (forget his name) who provides a winning personality.
