I would classify it more as sci-fi since it features aliens and not ghosts or monsters.
I still consider one of Carpenter's 5 best movies. heres the plot synopsis from IMDB: John Nada is a man without job who walks around a big American city trying to find something to do. He finally finds a job as a worker and a place to spend the nights, but one day something terrible happens to him. John discovers a pair of sun-glasses through which he can see the true face of people. Many persons in this city are in fact aliens (from the Andromeda) and most of them are important members of our society. They keep humans in ignorance and they rule our world as they like. Nada must find the rest of the men that know what's happening (those who made the strange sun-glasses) and join them in the fight against the aliens...

It's a sci fi/alien-takeover type of movie. It reminded me a little of the Stephen King story The Ten O'Clock People. The fight scene between Keith David and Piper has got to be one of the longest in movie history.

one of the best movies ever made. and has some great lines too.... just buy it, has plenty of re-watch value too.

Yeah, this movie totally rules. There's this thin social commentary about how the rich (republicans) who have all the power do all they can to keep the poor and minorities down with the help of the police and the fascist aliens. It actually works better than most serious political films.
And, oh God, the fight scene....its like you kinda think it might not ever end. Anyone's who watches South Park knows this is where they got the idea for the (in)famous "cripple fight" between Jimmy and Timmy. Absolutely hysterical!
