The Mighty

It seems these days that not a week goes by without a studio sending out its feelers to track down the few remaining comic book properties, plucking one out and depositing in their giant acquisition maw.

Many have been selected, yet few have actually made it through the development guts, but that hasn’t stopped the process continuing, especially when the likes of Thor are still bringing in the revenue.

The latest target? DC Comics’ The Mighty.

Created by writers Peter Tomasi and Keith Champagne along with artist Peter Snejberg, The Mighty follows police officer Gabriel Cole, whose life as a youngster was saved by seemingly heroic super-powered type Alpha One. But there’s a twist: Cole discovers that the alleged hero actually has a dark side and has horrible plans for his mortal charges.

So Cole decides to thwart Alpha One’s plans – no easy feat when your villain has special powers and you’re just relying on being a tough cop.

While the comic’s DC origins would usually indicate a quick trip through Warner Bros.’ halls (since the studio is partnered with the comics company), this one is unusual in that the creators hung on to the rights and have instead made a deal with the Benderspink production company and the Paramount-based Disruption Entertainment.

There’s no writer or director attached yet, so we’ll have to wait and see if it makes it to screens…
