Gun Rights & Gun Control

Well since, Egekrusher put the Abortion issue out there and bwind22 put the 'Great Marijuana Debate' out there. I figured I'd try and find out what peoples views on Gun Rights and Gun control are.

I am personally against ANY and ALL forms of gun control. Just because some psycho picks up any UZI and goes into a school or business and blows away their classmates or co-workers doesn't give the government the right to tell me that I can't own an UZI.

Guns aren't the problem. Dumbasses with Guns are the problem.

Alot of people label me as a 'militia' because of my views, but i'm far from miltia. I know a cop and a doctor that have the same views as me so...

How the fuck should I know probably!
Why? Because it's a brilliant film, it's so funny, and the soundtrack kicks fucking ass!

Im very anti-gun, but I assume a lot of people on here are pro-gun, so I wont try to force anybody to agree with me.

I am completely against gun control.

Americans think that the reason our violent crime rate is so high is because we're allowed guns. I've got some news for ya: THAT'S NOT THE REASON.

Canada has a MUCH higher rate of gun ownership than America does, has not even 1/20th of the violent crimes.

Why does America have so much violent crime? FEAR. That's right, Americans are afraid of their own shadows. You don't believe me? Walk up to a strangers house, in the middle of the day, and knock on their door. See what their reaction is. If they don't know you, they will eye you very hard, deny you access, and call the cops if they think you might even be a remote threat. Now, go to another country and do this. See what happens.

Well, this is a dificult topic for me (more difficult than the abortion one). I am not anti-gun. I do believe that invidiuals should be able to own a firearm, for protection. But, I do think that some guns are a little over-the-top. It is one thing to say that you own a handgun to protect your home and family, and quite another to say that you own an arsenal of automatic firearms stocked in your basement for the day when "the commies attack." I don't understand these types of people. But, I would never say that decent citizens cannot own these weapons, as long as they are responsible enough to keep them securely locked and inaccessible.

But, HappyCamper says that he is against ANY and ALL forms of gun control. With this statement, he has basically said that a violent criminal with a long history of "assault with a deadly weapon charges" (among other things) should be able to freely and easily purchase any of gun of his choice any time he chooses. Or, guns should be allowed to be sold out of ice cream trucks to children of all ages. This, I'm sorry to say, is complete bullshit. I agree with SOME form of gun control. I mean, these are deadly weapons we are talking about. We need to be able to control who buys them and how easily they can get them.

Anyway, in addition to my first post here, I have to say that I agree with the current gun control laws that are in effect: background checks and waiting periods. If a decent citizen wants to own a gun, he should have to go through these processes. A little temporary inconvenience on the part of the gun buyer goes a long way to keeping guns out of the wrong hands.

You're right, background checks & waiting periods are great for gun control. But if a criminal wants to buy a gun, they can find a way. (Ordell from Jackie Brown comes to mind). I think Police should have guns, and maybe hunters. Thats it.

If there were no guns, there would be no gun related deaths.

Orangestar, in an ideal world, I would agree with you. But, the problem I have with eliminating gun sales all together (just police officers or other government personnel being issued a piece), is that what you would end up with is:

People Who Would Own Guns:

1. Government Personnel
2. Hunters (maybe, as you said)
3. Criminals who obtained them illegally

What is missing? The innocent, decent, law-abiding citizen who now has no effective method to protect himself and his family from the armed criminals.

I should be probably actually explain my view a bit further.

I'm against waiting periods for guns, because by definition a criminal is one who doesn't follow the law. do you think a criminal is going to go into a gun store and try and buy a gun, of course not, he's going to go buy it from the guy in the black van in a dark alley. By getting rid of waiting periods for gun purchase, you're making it easier for the law abiding citizen to purchase a weapon to protect him or her self.

I also don't see a problem with owning a full automatic weapon. Sure I don't really need one, but why should that give the governement the right to tell me I can't have one. I don't really NEED a TV but you don't see the govt, outlawing those.

Also there are over 20,000 gun statutes on the books, a don't think 1 more is going to solve the gun-violence issue.

and finally...

Ban Guns, Make the Streets Safe for a Government to Take Over!

or and by the way, i'm not a militia member, I just don't trust our goverment, and anyone who says they trust the government 100% is a fool
