Warner Bros to remake "Buffy" EDIT - Shelved!

In the wake of "Twilight" and "True Blood," it's time to unearth "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

That's the assertion of Vertigo Entertainment, which is pairing with "Buffy" rights holders Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, to develop a theatrical reboot of the 1992 movie written by Joss Whedon and directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui.

"Now seems like the right time," said Vertigo principal Roy Lee. "Studios are looking for a franchise and vampires are relevant again."

However, those seeking further expansion of Whedon's Buffyverse can look elsewhere. The reboot may not feature any characters from the original film or from Whedon's TV spinoffs, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel."

The Hollywood Reporter reported the Vertigo-Kuzui partnership on its website Sunday night.

TV's "Buffy" ended its run in 2003; "Angel" followed suit the following year. However, Whedon has maintained both franchises by publishing ongoing serials through a partnership with Dark Horse Comics.

Lee, who is now meeting writers with Vertigo partner Doug Davison, says he wants a concept that hews to the original film. "As a producer, I'm just trying to find a movie the studios want to make," he says. "It seems the core concept is the way to go."

I read about this elsewhere, and read Whedon would have no part. I wondered when this would happen....I just KNEW it would. But without Whedon? That's just a really stupid move. Its going to completely take away what the fans loved about the SHOW, and the people that didn't like the show or the movie in the first place aren't exactly going to be interested either. Stupid, stupid move.

Atlas Entertainment announced today it is rebooting the beloved franchise, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Warner Bros. Pictures. Atlas' Charles Roven and Steve Alexander will produce the feature film alongside Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment (The Ring, How to Train Your Dragon, The Departed). Whit Anderson is writing the script.

Warner Bros. Pictures optioned the rights from creators Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and from Sandollar Productions (Sandy Gallin and Dolly Parton), for Atlas and Vertigo to produce. Buffy the Vampire Slayer first appeared as a film in 1992, subsequently becoming a cult hit and spawning the wildly popular television series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, among many others.

"Whit approached us with an exciting idea about how to update Buffy," said Roven. "There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character's return to the big screen. We're thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits. Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she'll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be."

Whit Anderson is represented by CAA, Wirehouse Entertainment and Julian Zajfen at Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca, Fischer, Gilbert-Lurie & Stifflemen.

Remember that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot that's been kicking around Hollywood?

Consider it staked — for now, at least.

The Los Angeles Times reported late last week that screenwriter Whit Anderson — the newcomer who'd been hired to reinvent Joss Whedon's widely adored film, TV and comic book series about a teenage vampire slayer and her equally capable friends — has been booted from the project after delivering a script that "fell far short of expectations and, in the end, was rejected completely."

Fans of the Whedon-verse and "Buffy" specifically are undoubtedly thrilled by the news of the reboot's apparent demise (the Los Angeles Times' original report notes that even though "a new writer is being sought," the project as a whole "may have lost some steam" following Anderson's disappointing effort). And fans aren't the only ones who are likely celebrating, as many cast and crew members associated with "Buffy" have already spoken out against the idea of tackling that story without Whedon's direct participation.

"I think it's a horrible idea," star Sarah Michelle Gellar said earlier this year. "To try to do a 'Buffy' without Joss Whedon, I mean that's, like, honestly, to be incredibly non-eloquent: that's the dumbest idea I've ever heard."

“It’s hard to imagine anybody but Joss bringing that to the screen," former "Buffy" writer Marti Noxon told MTV News in early 2011. "I wouldn’t want to be the person trying to write it. And I worked on the show, but I would not want to be that [person] because the fans are very loyal. They’re excruciatingly loyal, unless they hate you, in which case they’re excruciating about that too.”
