The Swarm remake

What has Piranha 3D’s success spawned?

Well, for one thing, it looks like we’re in for a wave of critter disaster (critaster?) movies getting remade.

First up? Irwin Allen’s 1978 movie The Swarm, about killer bees from South America.

The Internet is abuzz today with word flying in that The Ring producer Roy Lee and Paranormal Activity’s Steven Schneider are busy little bees developing a new take on the film, which saw entomologist Michael Caine stung with the job of stopping the US military from attacking the angry insects, a plan he figures would only enrage them and see Houston overrun, resulting in trouble for a star-studded cast that included Katharine Ross, Richard Widmark, Richard Chamberlain, Olivia de Havilland and more.

According to The Wrap, the producers have attached ads director Ash Bolland to handle megaphone duties and are now looking for a writer to crank out a script. There’s no word on whether they plan to go back to the Arthur Herzog book that inspired the ‘70s schlock-fest or if it’ll be a new concept. While we're pretty sick of remakes at this point, at least this one has the advantage of remaking a dodgy original.
