Spielberg and Jackson unite for "Tintin"

Mar 14, 2008

Director Steven Spielberg's next project (after Indy 4) will be the motion - capture trilogy Tintin, a collaboration between himself and Peter Jackson.

Spielberg will reportedly direct the first installment, followed by Jackson; the helmer of the third film has yet to be announced.

Actor Andy Serkis (best known for his role as "Gollum" in Jackson's Lord of the Rings and as the title character in King Kong) made the revelation during an interview with IndieLondon.co.uk (as pointed out by CHUD.com).

"In fact tomorrow I'm flying out to start on Tintin. Steven Spielberg is directing the first one, and then Peter Jackson is doing the second," Serkis said. "The bulk of the shoot starts in September but things got a little bit moved around after the writers' strike."

The comics series, penned by Herge, follows the globe-trotting adventures of young journalist Tintin and his various companions — particularly his dog Snowy and his pal, the sea-dog Captain Haddock (Serkis).

Hmmmmm, I don't think I've really read the comic, a little research though and I still find myself fairly uninterested. A powerhouse duo is behind this so I guess I have to wait and see though.

i used to get a childrens digest when i was little that had a Tin Tin episode in each one. Used to love them. I have the boxset of the animated series so i guess i'm still a fan.

this could be a pretty cool trilogy.

unless i'm mistaken, this is where the 80's band The Thompson Twins got their name ?

Could be- though the two detectives in Tin-Tin were always called Thompson & Thompson.

English actor Thomas Sangster has reportedly landed the title role in the Steven Spielberg-Peter Jackson motion-capture collaboration Tintin.

Sangster, 17, has appeared in Love Actually and Nanny McPhee, as well as two episodes of Doctor Who. He also played young Adolf Hitler in the miniseries Hitler: The Rise of Evil.

According to The Daily Mail, Sangster "has already been to Los Angeles to work on pre-production test sequences with both directors." The actor's reps declined comment when reached by the paper.

Spielberg will direct the first installment in the trilogy (production begins later this year), while Jackson will helm the second. The Daily Mail claims that either James Cameron (Titanic) might direct the third film or that Spielberg and Jackson will co-direct it.

The comics series, penned by Herge, follows the globe-trotting adventures of young journalist Tintin and his various companions — particularly his dog Snowy and his pal the sea-dog Captain Haddock (King Kong's Andy Serkis).

The studios haven't confirmed it yet, but AintItCool.com is reporting that British comedy stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are confirmed to star as bumbling English detectives Thompson and Thomson in Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's Tintin films.

The initial casting rumours linking the Hot Fuzz duo to the roles first emerged back in May. We still can't help but speculate, as when we first reported the rumour, just how the somewhat different looking Pegg and Frost will play the characters -- who are indistinguishable apart from the 'P' in one of their names.

Since the ambitious motion-capture series was announced, the project has been plagued with production issues. Firstly, the film was delayed when nervy studio Paramount decided to share the $130 million budget with Sony.

This in turn caused lead actor Thomas Sangster to pull out of playing Tintin due to scheduling problems. Finally the proposed third film in the series (Spielberg will direct the first, Jackson the second), has been cancelled.

With production on the first in the series allegedly only a month away, expect to hear more casting news on this project soon. Andy Serkis is already strongly linked to the role of Captain Haddock.

“The first part of the film, which is the most mysterious part, certainly owes much to not only film noir but the whole German Brechtian theatre — some of our night scenes and our action scenes are very contrasty. But at the same time the movie is a hell of an adventure, as it is based on The Secret Of The Unicorn books.”

The film stars Jamie Bell as Tintin, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as Thompson and Thomson respectively (“When people first heard that bit of casting they thought that we’d gone barking mad,” says Jackson. Adds Spielberg, “The Thompson Twins can’t be clones of each other. Nick and Simon provided all the differences we needed to foil for each other. They have a wonderful moment in the movie where they start to have an argument about whose sidekick is whose.”) and Daniel Craig as Red Rackham.

It also features Cary Elwes, Toby Jones, Mackenzie Crook and Daniel Mays, and will be in theaters next October.
