The House of the Devil
March 31, 2008
Horror legends Dee Wallace and Tom Noonan have signed up to star in the forthcoming satanic fright fest The House of the Devil. According to Screen Daily, the story revolves around a poor college student who answers an ad searching for a babysitter and ends up trapped in a house of horrors fighting for her life. Noonan, best known for his chilling performance as Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter, will play one half of the satanist couple who lure the girl to their home. Mary Waronov (The Devil's Rejects) will play his wife. Wallace, who made a name for herself in early '80s horrors The Howling, Cujo and Critters, has been cast as "The Landlady." Ti West, whose credits include The Roost and the forthcoming Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, will write and direct the film, which has just started shooting in Connecticut.

The House of the Devil
Magnolia Pictures' genre arm, Magnet Releasing, has acquired the U.S. rights to the indie horror film The House of the Devil.
House premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival a couple of months back, where IGN called it "an old-school tension builder, slowly ratcheting up the anxieties of the audience who, of course, is fully aware that something bad is going to happen to lead character Samantha (Jocelin Donahue). The film takes its time getting to the badness, but it's never frustrating despite its terror-penny-pinching ways. And when the truth is revealed and the horrible stuff starts to kick in, it happens quickly, skillfully, and rewardingly, menacing the viewer thoroughly and with an outburst of blood, screams, and revelations." Ti West ("The Roost") wrote, directed and edited "Devil," an homage to 1980s horror films that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. It stars Jocelin Donahue, Greta Gerwig, Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov. Pic's producers are Roger Kass, Josh Braun, Larry Fessenden and Peter Phok. The film will hit theaters at Halloween, of course, in addition to being offered through video-on-demand in late September. Magnet has also been behind such critical genre hits as the excellent vampire film Let the Right One In and the nice little time-trippy Timecrimes.

It is a good film with a good heart. Nothing much happpens, yet I was still drawn in by the attention to detail and odd pacing. Aj Bowen is fantastic in a small but pivotal role and Jocelin Donahue is fabulous as the sweet, innocent lead.
A great effort in a small budget, but not necessarily a great film.
