Spider-man spinoff - Venom

July 31, 2008

Sony has announced plans to develop a Venom movie, based on the villainous parasite from the Spider-Man series.

The studio is hoping that the character will re-invigorate the franchise, in the same way that Fox is hoping their forthcoming Wolverine pic will do for the X-Men series.

Mean Creak scribe Jacob Estes has already been commissioned to have a stab at the script, but The Hollywood Reporter claims that Sony is considering going in a different direction and therefore seeking writers for a new draft.

HR also reports that the studio isn't convinced that Topher Grace, who played Venom in Spider-Man 3, can carry a tent-pole picture and so is considering other actors.

Although, the studio is still developing a fourth Spider-Man flick, set for a 2011 release.

For continuity's sake, they should have Topher Grace reprise the role, I think. He's not a horrible actor or anything. Though I can understand them wanting a bigger name for the lead role.

I will be checking this out, as well as any future Spider-Man flicks too.

They could have it follow on without him. Just don't have Eddie Brock in it at all. It wouldn't be the same by any means, probably not good. But I think it's better than having a whole new actor, and therefore probably a retcon of Spiderman 3.

Topher Grace was never Eddie Brock, not for me anyways. I'm curious to see who will take over the role.

I thought Topher Grace and Venom were the only redeeming factor in Spiderman 3

|I thought it was good scriptwriting for eddie and venom, (Although he didn't refer to himself as "we"). Topher Grace just didn't have the eddie look. And Venom didn't look like Venom should!

Agreed. I'm a fan of the comic, and he definitely did not have the look.

Um, didn't Eddie Brock and Venom died during Spider-Man 3?

Well that never stopped Venom. Others besides Eddie Brock have been Venom in the comics.

Just no Eric Foreman this time.

If they bring Scorpion into a film he could become venom. He's the latest one in the comics.

Sooooo.

Obviously a Venom movie would mean that they're going to bring the simbiote saga into play. That means CARNAGE! Other than Carnage, Venom never really had anyone to fight outside of Spidey.

I'd love to see how they work that out.
