Hmm...

Good question, I would have to say yes... but only the smaller denominations. They used salt to preserve food when it was used as currency, that's all I'm basing my guess off of.

What about decayed/decaying fish then? Will they be good enough to pass off as currency?
Like say, a 20 lb fish denominated as 1000 dollars starts decaying...will it still hold good to be used as a 1000 bucks piece?
Or will they eat it? (marinated in curd maybe?)

If fish were currency, I'd be glad that I live in the land of 10,000 lakes.

I could only see fish being currency if it was eaten/used for something.

Decayed fish would be worthless as currency unless it could be put to use in someway.

Fish won't become currency. There are several good reasons for this:

1. Imagine how much your wallet/purse would stink
2. They are too large, so wouldn't scale well.
3. Pelicans would be the richest people in the world
4. The world is already drowning in debt, so sourcing your currency from the ocean would be counter-intuitive
5. Everyone would have to go to loan-sharks for funds

On the positive side, however, there would be no need for a stock market and a fish market, they could easily be combined.

Why?

Aside from being used as currency, can you come up with a practical use for a dollar bill?
