The hot plate would burn right thru the cloth(the heat necessary to pop corn is quite high) and wouldn't even generate thru wood(the table).

I think CNN said they showed popped popcorn being dropped onto the table and reversed the footage while removing the kernels digitally.

With a hotplate on low enough and a thick (or even slightly damp) fabric you could easily pop a kernel without burning the cloth.
