Academy finally giving Kurosawa his due!

August 21, 2008

Here's yet another p.o.v. on director Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon": The landmark pic has been digitally remastered and will screen as part of a three-month showcase of the Japanese helmer's works at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

The release of the restored "Rashomon" print and Acad tribute coincide with the 10th anniversary of Kurosawa's death on Sept. 6, 1998.

The film's restoration was undertaken by the Academy Film Archive, the Film Foundation and the Kadokawa Culture Promotion Foundation. Starring Toshiro Mifune and released in Japan in 1950, "Rashomon" is the first Japanese pic to be restored by the Acad and Film Foundation.

Along with a retrospective screening series that kicks off with "Rashomon," the Acad will feature a new exhibition showcasing the director's original artwork rarely seen outside Japan.

"Akira Kurosawa: Film Artist" will be unveiled in the Academy galleries following the Sept. 18 screening of "Rashomon" at Acad's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The event will include a panel discussion with the director's collaborators, friends and family, including son Hisao Kurosawa.

Other pics running as part of the tribute include "Seven Samurai," "Ran" and "Yojimbo."

Kurosawa salute will run on Fridays and Saturdays from Sept. 18-Oct. 4.

All I can say to that is...about damn time!
