Fun Slashers for a Fun NightI'm having a movie night tomorrow. It's starting at 6PM,

I'm having a movie night tomorrow. It's starting at 6PM, and hopefully lasting until 3AM. That's 9 solid hours of feature film fun; give or take. The theme at hand: Slashers of the 70's & 80's. I'm not talking Halloween, Friday the 13th or A Nightmare on Elm Street. My audience is too familiar with these.

The list of available titles are as follows:

The Burning (Uncut) 1h 30m
Re-Animator (Uncut) 1h 30m
Slumber Party Massacre 1h 10m
Maniac! 1h 30m
Prom Night 1h 30m
Demons 1h 30m

I haven't seen any of these listed titles. Only the trailers. What are your opinions?

I'm most interested in... The Burning, Re-Animator and Slumber Party Massacre. Is Demons a gore-fest? I though it was, but the trailer doesn't even look horror-ish. Prom Night also looks quite good.

What's the best way to organize these?

I was thinking...

6:00 - 7:30: The Burning
8:00 - 9:30: Maniac!
10:00 - 11:30: Prom Night
12:00 - 1:30: Slumber Party Massacre
2:00 - 3:30: Re-Animator

PS. Boy, the trailers for these are classics. They are so much better then those fake trailers created for Grindhouse (with the exception of Thanksgiving... please make it.) I honestly thought those trailers were comedied-up, but honestly... I laughed my ass off more watching these ACTUAL trailers. If only today's cinema was as fine as this. And Edgar Wright's trailer was so based off of the original The Burning trailer. I hope I'm not the last to realize this...

I must admit I've never seen The Burning.

I'd start with Slumber Party Massacre, because it's silly and fun, followed by Prom Night which is more of the same, but with a more coherent story.

Demons is gory, weird and awesome, but in that "Italian" way that many won't appreciate. Re-Animator is the gem of the bunch. A legitimately great, gory & funny horror flick that never disappoints. Place it early enough in your line-up that everyone sees it.

Maniac is cool, but kind of rough and I'd save it for the end, for the real gorehounds...this is a marathon you're sharing with others, right?

My suggestion - start off with Prom Night, then Slumber Party Massacre. Both are almost same IMO, but Prom Night is a better slasher so it will help you get off on the right foot.

Next, The Burning, followed by The Re-Animator. The Burning is another solid slasher (infamous for its raft scene), and then The Re-Animator will be great to cover the 3 slashers-in-a-row gap, and would be a welcome change with its black humor and gore.

Finish it off with Demons, which is a real frightfest (along the lines of Dawn of the Dead, but with demons) and Maniac, the toughest of all the above-mentioned to watch. Its a ruthless movie, so it would be safe to watch it when you would like to finish off the night on a hard-hitting note.

Happy viewing!

Yes, a handful of friends will be coming over for this. Most of them are big gore-hounds, but have never even heard of many of these titles. I'm sure Re-Animator will be the fan favourite in this group, considering most of them adore Evil Dead.

Since both of you pretty much agree on the order, I think it's safe to say that it works. I'll probably watch Prom Night first, and cut Demons for tonight. Not enough time.

Its your choice, Josh...but I would suggest cutting Slumber Party Massacre out for tonight. Demons is a great movie, with plenty of gore and full of fright and campy moments. I am sure you and your friends would love it.

Re-arranged order -

- Prom Night
- The Burning
- The Re-Animator
- Demons
- Maniac

That would be my recommendation.:)

That would be my recommedation as well, except I personally wouldn't bother with Prom Night, because it bores the heck out of me. But others seem to like it and it is better than Slumber Party Massacre, so I guess I would show it first. I admit I have never seen Maniac, though it has been on my to be watched list for awhile now.....(and yes, V, I know, I KNOW :p ;) ).

I just went to start my Prom Night DVD and... well, it doesn't work. The DVD player doesn't even detect the disc. It just keeps loading and then reads "Disc Error." So much for a brand new DVD... wonder if I can return it; since it's opened.

I guess the new line-up will be exactly what you guys agree on above (with Prom Night replaced). Sounds great; wasn't sure what to expect from Demons, but since that brief explanation I'm eager to watch it now.

- Slumber Party Massacre
- The Burning
- The Re-Animator
- Demons
- Maniac

It's amazingly, awesomely bad...you'll love it! I saw it in a theater recently and it was a great experience catching it with a rowdy, drunken crowd.
