I wasn't aware that there was an edited release available.
However, I think if you get it from toetagpictures.com website you will be ok.

These guys have all 3 in stock, according to their website:

xploitedcinema.com

Just search on their site for "august underground" and you will see all 3. Note that some of the "snuff editions" are not in stock.

Hope that helps!

okay, just checked salo out on imdb. don't bother responding morgue. it ain't my cup of tea. i'd still be interested in your post mortem of the three augusts. i've read a few reviews that say they're pretty dull. is this the case?

No worries mate, glad to help :)

With regards to the 3 august undergrounds:

The video quality of the first two is intentionally degraded so that it looks like an nth generation dub of some sickos' home movie. General nastiness interspersed with some footage of them doing some everyday things. There are some excellent gore effects in these movies (but a few that look a little less than convincing).

However I don't think that is where the power of these films lay. I think it is more that they depict some truly depraved acts, and they try (and for the most part succeed) to depict them in a brutally, nastily realistic manner. You will see what I mean - in many Hollywood movies there is a degree (usually a large one) or sterility when depicting murders on screen. Not so with these films. It is as sickening, messy, and lurid as one could imagine it would be in real life (although I speak with literally no experience on that subject :D ).

In the third film, the main characters obviously got a new camcorder because it is shot in widescreen and not intentionally degraded. I guess that gives a little to authenticity - but we all know it is not real anyway, so I don't think it makes that much of a difference. But you can see all the gore/effects uninhibited.

I think at the end of the day, you will be disappointed with these films for two reasons that I can think of. Firstly, whilst they are powerful, there is little in the way of story and therefore there is virtually no repeat viewing value. They are more an experience than something to enjoy or watch over. Secondly, I think you will be disappointed because these films are so hyped as being the ultimate in gore/nastiness. One's imagination must build them up to a level that they can't possibly deliver on - it is only natural that we tend to imagine things that would be the most disturbing to us individually, and of course the filmmakers can't know what that would be or cater to everyone's most distressing images exactly.

Having said all that, at the end of the day if you want to experience these films, then go for it. Even though I really have no plans to rewatch them, I am glad that I did see them just to know what all the fuss is about, and because some parts of them really did make me feel very uncomfortable. However when I think about a movie that I want to watch, these wouldn't really ever jump to mind (give me a Hammer or Amicus film any day! :D )
