In the Tradition of Texas Chainsaw!
Hello horror fans! I'm brand new here and my favorite subgenre of horror film is the "urbanoia" horror film (this is a relatively obscure term, but refers to films where urban/suburban characters find themselves out in the rural country among murderous country folk. I'm also interested in any horror films that deal with issues of race/class differences (e.g. rich vs. poor, black vs. white, etc.).
Here's a list of some of my favorite "urbanoia" films. Can you guys think of any others? I know there are tons. Let's see if we can make a list of as many as we can! Texas Chainsaw Massacre I, II, III, IV (1974, 1986, 1990, 1994) Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Remake) - (2003) Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - (2006) The Hills Have Eyes I, II (1977, 1985) The Hills Have Eyes I, II (remakes) (2006, 2007) Children of the Corn (1-7) - (various dates) Deliverance (1972) I Spit on Your Grave (1978) Gator Bait (1974) Wolf Creek (2005) Jeepers Creepers (2001) Wrong Turn (2003) House of a Thousand Corpses (2003) The Devil's Rejects (2005) Redneck County (1975) Pigs (1972) Can you add any to this list? There are many more... |

Savage Weekend, in some ways Night of the Living Dead, 2000 Maniacs.
It is in a lot of ways a great genre, but one that the right things don't always get highlighted in. Our frontier's limits haven't quite been tested. In a lot of ways, ethically, we're still sort of in the wild west. Even in the burbs, you get the wrong side of the tracks and suburban myths about child molesters and other bogeymen. America isn't done yet. |

Southern Comfort.......a really good example, basically a slick Deliverance ripoff.

I would suggest Natural Born Killers even though it is not really a horror movie but The Devil's Rejects totally sold me because it reminded me of Natural Born Kilelrs. Two of my fav movies.

Is Last House on the Left "urbanoia"???
Great suggestions all around! Lately I've been doing a scene by scene analysis of Last House on the Left and trying to figure out if it fits with these other "urbanoia" films. In some ways it's a "reverse urbanoia" film since the murderers are city thugs and Mari comes from a relatively rural area. Maybe this reveals something about these films that goes deeper that rural settings and toothless locals.
Anyway, I can't wait to check out some of these films (escpecially Poor Pretty Eddie - against your advice Doc!). Let's keep them coming if we can, this is fascinating stuff. I actually have a number to add myself that I found in a book called "Nightmare Movies." |
