Do you ever wonder?

I was just thinking about this while I was reading over a thread someone started about murdering people... Do you ever wonder who it is that you are talking with on these forums? When you think about it, it could be anyone, anywhere... It's weird to me because there may be all types of weird people on here and maybe even some actual lunatics who are capable of doing horrible things. How do you know anything about anyone on here? There have already been a few posts today that I saw where people are talking about hurting or even killing other people and I think that this is pretty fucked up. It really gets my brain churning...

Ninety-nine percent of the time nobody's serious when they talk about killing people. I don't think there are any actual lunatics on this forum, because actual lunatics usually have better (and by better I mean worse) things to do, or are antisocial to the point at which they wouldn't really want to debate things on the internet. On the other hand, if there were a Ted Bundy type among us, he would seem right as rain in his posts and therefore wouldn't send up the red flag you feel certain people are. I think for the most part we're pretty sensitive people with good boundaries, and those of us who aren't usually do something offensive enough to get them banned. And even very sensitive people can have very sick senses of humor. I think it would be funny if somebody dropped a sack of kittens out of a helicopter onto an unsuspecting nun, crushing her in a barrage of angry kittens. This is funny to me because it's absurd. Those of us who make jokes about hurting people find it funny because that kind of behavioral extreme would for us be absurd. Although, there are situations in which I might hurt another human being, they're pretty extreme and would involve that person hurting someone I loved or else causing some sort of horrible damage to the world around me. I'm glad to see that somebody has these concerns, though. If, as in the Flying Circus sketch, we manage to "spot a looney" I'm sure we'd do what any decent, sensible person would do and either be rid or help out somebody capable of doing something ghastly. We're good people, except for those of us who are terrible people, but they're not going to do any kind of serious harm.

Interesting points. I wasn't necessarily calling anyone out as being a lunatic on here, I just thought that it was an interesting thing to think about. I also have a pretty absurd sense of humor, so I can appreciate a lot of different shit.

An even bigger problem, probably, is multiple screen-name forum trolls.

Fascinating... So I take it that you are a member of a lot of different forums, then?

Of all the places in the world to encounter a lunatic, the internet is the safest. Not exactly within striking distance.
