Well, I got a t-shirt for Christmas. It's a black shirt with white writing that says:
No Thanks - Ive Already Got A Penguin I love penguins...but I really dont get this shirt. Maybe Im just slow, but none of my friends get it either. Im a little wary about wearing it without knowing the joke...anyone care to help me out?

I have no idea of the origin of this phrase, but I've heard it a ton. It was a by-product of the late 80's and early 90's teen fad of "being random" - the teens term for non-sequiter (Latin for "does not follow").
I used to do this all the time. Some stranger asks you a question (directions, the time, etc) and you answer with something that makes no sense and is only funny to you and your friends. One of the oft-used phrases was "No thanks, I already have a penguin" but I also remember "No one suspects the butterflies" and "Cheese is made from milk" and "did you even notice that grass is like...everywhere?" Stupid, yes...but good for a chuckle or two - and great fun to make them up on the fly. Yeah...I was a weird kid

When did you use this one? I ask because i can peg it directly to an episode of the Simpsons, where in the context, it actually makes some sense...

early 90's?
I'm sure most of these phrases came from the Simpsons - like "Can't sleep, clowns will eat me"

Its from an episode where bart said he wanted to be reborn as a butterfly, because no one suspects the butterfly... And in his imagination, he is a butterfly holding a can of gas, and he framed Skinner for burning down the school.

I've seen it a lot of places but haven't been able to find out exactly when or where it was started.
