Being a Horror movie fanatic

Quoted from urge in the Six obscure movies thread:

Quote:
it wasnt until recently i realized how few people liked horror films ... when i was growing up it seemed all kids liked them .. i just never stopped.

but that kind of goes for all film ... i'd say you are either in the 1 - 5 % (hard core movie lover)

or the 20% (movies are stupid - i'll watch sports or friends or cheers reruns)

or the remaining % ... whatever .. i'll watch it if its on or if the people at work keep telling me to rent it.

i find only the hard core movie lovers find themselves watching foreign film, black and white film, etc...
I'd consider myself a horror (and movie in general) fanatic. I watch at least 5-10 movies a week. I build my collection up whenever I can afford it. I try to keep up on movie news as much as I can. When my friends and I go out, or sit around at someones house having brews, we almost always talk about movies. I organize my collection and keep a database of it. I try to go to conventions when I can to meet my favorite actors. Sometimes I plan my entire monthly buget around the fact that DeepDiscountDVD is having a sale. I also spend hours at a time on sunday mornings browsing Amazon, following links to see if I can find something I've not heard of before to buy.

First question is, what do you consider to be a horror movie fanatic?

Second question, do you consider yourself in that 1-5%?

That does sound obsessive, and probably a bad thing if you don't really have the money.

I know a guy who has just thousands upon thousands. He has millions more than he could ever possibly watch. I keep wanting to say, "Hey, could I have eighty of ninety of your videos?" but I have a feeling he would be upset by the idea.

If you´d ask me that question 1-2 years ago i whould without a doubt have answered 5%.

But now i don´t know anymore... Can´t seem to find time or concentration to see anything else than horror movies and a few selected comedys.

Guess i´m just a hardcore horror-fan now.

I'm not sure if I would fall into that category or not... I truly love film and spend a great deal of time watching movies, more often than not foreign language films. However, I rarely if ever actually buy movies. My true passion is collecting books, so Netflix is definitely my friend.

I suggest you switch to a cheaper format and buy used over the net...like if you go to half.com and get set up, you can find used VHS copies of things for just a buck or two. Don't try to destroy your movie obsession--tailor it to fit your budget instead.

Also, AVOID ALL CURRENT MOVIES because most of them suck. That'll get you away from the expensive new releases. You don't need to watch special features about movies made by assholes. Cultivate an interest in old films nobody likes or wants. They're cheaper, generally.

well ocme to think of it im specifically a horror movie fanatic, i only buy action movies every once and a while, however i have been expanding on the horror sub-genre that i watch lately. ive slowed down a little bit of the foriegn trash films and started watching classic higher budget films that i havnt seen before, the thing, the fog, pet semetary ect.

my passions of literature/film/music are equal in my heart.

external forces determine what i get to spend my actual time doing and movies seems to win out - as i only need 90 minutes usually - i can do other things while watching, my family can watch with me, etc.

when you have a family - book reading time tends to be anti social... and music - christ - i cant remember the last time i just listened to music.
just in the car or at work these days ..

but i love all 3 equally.

because i also play a couple of competative sports, have a lot of work to do on the house, have a kid who's in a few sports, etc ... i have more interests than 10 of any other people i know in my life combined.

still .. i'm amazed at j.q. public without passions for anything .. hardly anyone reads, cares about music, or really explores film at my age .. all they give a shit about is saving for a boat or snowmobile .. it really sets me apart from most people i know in suburbia.

downtown where culture and art still mean something - i fit in just fine.
