Coffin Joe? Anyone ever heard of this?

I was talking to a pal from Australia on a different forum today and he told me that I MUST check out the "Coffin Joe Trilogy". I told him I had never even heard of it before, but I'd look in to it. (I found 2 of the 3 on Netflix & have them lined up.) He's telling me these movie are big underground cult classics, but like I said I haven't ever even heard them mentioned here. Anyone know anything about these three movies?

At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul

This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse

Awakening of the Beast

Any info would be appreciated. If you've seen them and wouldn't mind giving me a brief review and/or grade, that would GREATLY appreciated.

Oh, yes, certainly, check out some Coffin Joe. I'm no expert but I have seen some of the films and they're pretty darn bizarre. Worth seeing.

I too have seen most of Jose Mojica Marins' films. He is a Brazilian director very much into pushing the limits of Brazilian taste & censorship- particularly in the areas of criticism of the Catholic religion. Lots of nudity in many of his films. Plenty of weird effects. He's the only name there is in Brazilian horror films and as such his films are well worth seeing- particularly the Coffin Joe series.

I believe there's a box set that comes in - you guessed it - a coffin available. I've never seen them, but everyone I've talked to that has says they're well worth the blind buy. Don't know how easy they are to find region 1, but Amazon might have them.

I'll scope it out on old faithful (Ebay). If the price is right I'll snag it, otherwise I'll watch the 2 I can see for free off Netflix and then make a decision as to whether tracking down the third will be worth my time.

Yeah...the Coffin Joe character is...sort of like The Devil crossed with Freddy Krueger...

...he's this scary dude with a cape and top hat who magically appears in strange situations and transports people to worlds of horror. He sometimes rants and raves.

Occasionally he exhibits a kind of compassion, but much of the time he victimizes people and does horrible things.

I bought the Coffin Joe box set (yes, in a coffin) for my brother. Good, weird stuff.
