Lifeguards Strap Explosive To Rabbit And Throw It In Lake

Lucky The Rabbit Survives Explosive And Lake

San Francisco, California -- Two California lifeguards were sentenced to jail after apologizing for taping an explosive to Lucky the rabbit and tossing her into a lake.

Lucky's former owner, Nick Sigmon, 19, and his friend Paul Collins, 21, pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty. Sigmon drew 30 days in jail and Collins 15 days, with their time to be served on work furlough.

Lucky, meanwhile, lived up to her name and now has been placed in another home, where she leads a pampered life.

Collins and Sigmon were charged with taping an M-1000 -- a firecracker with the power of a quarter of a stick of dynamite -- to the rabbit, which was then thrown into Castro Valley's Lake Don Castro on July 13, the San Francisco Chronicle said Thursday.

Luckily for Lucky, the explosive failed to detonate. Sigmon and Collins were arrested after pictures of the incident wound up on the Internet.
