Fucking people....
I just had some dumbfuck call in with an "important" problem. I cant really give out all of the details (confidentiality and all that), but here is a good analogy:
Say you wanted to be able to browse any book in a library. You can check them out to browse them more conveniently. Now, these books shouldnt allow just anyone to read them. If you want to browse the book, you need to at least know what the fuck it is called. This asshole's complaint? He cant browse ALL of the books from his desk until he fionds the one he wants. (the 'books' are computers, btw). I tell him he really shouldnt be able to, in order to view the books, ideally he needs to know what it is called. He doesnt want to. And the guy Next to him can do it.... (fucking child, i swear..) He expresses that he doesnt knwo why i cant see this is important, could he talk to someone else, right now. I tel him no one else here can do a thing, i will have to log a ticket to the people that actually take care of this type of crap. not good enough, he thinks ANYONE other than me will see things his way, and fix it for him magically. There is one other guy in here, and he has only been here maybe a year. I have been here over 3 and am technically now a programmer (ie, i am not an idiot, and actually a fucking expert....), but he insists, so i put his dumb ass on hold and let hims weat for a few minutes. I come back and tell him i had talked to one of the guys that administrate these things, and they had a suggestion (absolute bullshit, and i know it wont work, but if it gets him off the phone) so i take over his computer. he INSISTED it was one name, but it wasnt... And while i am on his pc, i see a bunch of software that isnt licensed by the company. this is bad, because most software specifically states you cant use it on a corporate owned computer without the company buying a license for it, so basically, i cant use my own copy of Adobe Acrobat on myy work computer, because Adobe could technically sue the company for it if they found out. plus, unlicensed software is untested software, so we dont know what the fuck it will do to/in outr environment. Once i am on his pc, there ar 4 things that shouldnt be there that i saw right off.(fucking dipshit.....) I work my magic, though i know it will do NOTHING. It doesnt work, fucking DUH! "I have to log a ticket to the experts, ther eis nothing any of us inherew can do" NOW he fuckling accepts it. No fucking books if you dont know the fucking name. So i get him off the phone and vent. My boss says, you are correct, he shouldnt be able to browse if he doesnt know the name. Validation, yes, but no reprecussions for the dipshit i talked to. i KNOW i was fucking right. I fucking hate people. Oh, and i had no fucking coffee this morning, so i am a tad edgy.....

i can relate. before i got my current position, i was website support (with a very basic website manager program) and i'd get calls asking the most ridiculous question. One man told me he'd been working with computers since before I was born and that he wanted to speak to someone more knowledgable, i.e. a man. If you're so smart, why are you calling support?!
now I just get dumb e-mails with everything misspelled so I can just laugh. |

Yeah, i knwo what you mean. After 3 years, you pretty much see it all.
I have been KILLING for a job as a web programmer. I have the title and the pay, but i still have to answer support calls.... To give you an idea of how stupid some of the poeple in this company are... on eof th eguys here had to explain the difference between a left and a right click to a guy who had just been hired on as a fucking department manager.... I seriously think we employee people that are dumber than usual

My thoughts are that if you don't know what a domain name is and how it is not the same as a website, then you should not own either.

You work/worked for a web hosting company? ohmy god.... if feel real bad for you.
Give the wysiwyg editors they have out there, everybody and their mother in law seems to think that nmaking a decent site is child's play. Granted, its not hard, but you have to have SOME understanding of computers.... I had a call one time from a level 5 engineer (someone who makes in excess of 80 grand a year because of his "knowledge") who asked me, in all seriousness "is the server with the internet down? I cant reach anything..." I work for a Networking Company. We build and design routers, switches, hubs..... very very sad. no wonder our stock has been in the shitter for the past few years...

actually I work for a domain name registrar who offers website solutions, however we may ;) be making a foray into hosting in the coming months.
My official job title is customer satisfaction specialist, which is "dumping ground for whatever you can think of" in layman's terms. Our website product is basically a wysiwyg, but more simple than any I have used and people are still lost and baffled. They also have a billion complaints. If you want it a specific way, then you can write the coding instead of using template based software, douchestick. I am glad to not be answering phone support anymore. I can deal with people via e-mail. |

I want neither. I hate support. I have developed the attitude that they are all morons, so i would trather build mrorn-proof software than support it.
Get this, i designed forms for whatever you may need, server access, new software, a new computer, you name it. Since we use a microsoft domain in our company, it was a small thing to design forms that fill themselves out. If there was a form that required the person's name, extension, manager, email and cost-center, i made a form that would do that for you. i even made it ieasy for them to change who the form was for, in case someone had to use someone else's computer. All it required was for you to go to the page, and click submit. I recieved complaints from people who couldnt figure out how to use it! It says "HIT SUBMIT" for christs sake!! There is no such thing as idiot proof.... Thje funny thing is, basic web design is pretty easy, its just formatting.anyone should be able to grasp many of the basics, buthey, some people just arent savvy in that way. No biggie. What i hate are people that know nothing, but ask for the world, and then ride your ass about it because they cant grasp that you cant just tell the computer what you want and it'll fabricate it for you

the thing that amuses me is that when i first got a computer in 2001 for hs graduation, i didn't know how to copy paste and now i am providing other people with support. I taught myself everything i know and it's not that hard. People just have no drive or ambition to resolve things themselves.

Exactly! I had played around with computers for a while, nothing big though. I knew macs and windows 98 okay. In 2001, i decided i didnt want to be a wood worker any more (i was a produce worker for 3 years, and then a woodworker for 4), so i listed everything i had done with computers and had my sister give it to the helpdesk manager at the time, and i got hired.
Within 2 weeks, i had one of the long-timers asking me questions (she was an idiot, though). i am 100% self taught, i had learned html, and i now know javascript, vbscript, c#, html, asp.net and sql, all learned on my own. Oh wait, i took a 4 day course on asp .net last december  I am now building programs that would normally require a team of people with years of experience, and doing a damn fine job, i might add. And they STILL wont let me stop answering support calls....

the main reason you're probably still where you are is because they know how good you are and want to abuse it. Sad but true.
I want to learn a lot more, but have no clue where to start from where I am. I figured eventually i will get ahead. |
