Rap Lyrics

We've been having some really good debates lately on HDC so I thought I'd add one more.

What do you think about the lyrics of rap songs? Specifically ones derogitory towards women and gay people. Does it affect kids?

Personally, I dont mind specific words, I mind the message. IMO, it is changing the way guys think about girls. Its teaching guys my age that it's okay to treat women like objects. But saying 'bitch' in a song isnt going to make me hate it. It's all about the context.

how about all those big hair bands from back in the day. they sang about shit like that. but no one ratted on them

i dont care what they talk about. if people want to do it i think theyd do it regardless of the music

anyways id right songs abou my legions of dudes and how i treat them like shit if i were to become famous. so maybe good thing im not becoming a singer huh otherwise o'reilly would be on my ass. oh how id love to tear that man a new one

anyways its just scapegoats. dont talk about kids taking rap music seriously. try talking about how shitty the school systems are, and how a fuckin proposition to charge $.10 on every mocha lattte, and the money to go to innercity schools, was just too much for people and struck down? fat cats have the nerve to whine about gangsters running around but wont even pay $.10 to help with the schools... and i thought my hs was shitty.

I think it depends on who is saying it, and the tone in their voice. I mean when I listen to an Eminem song like "Kill You" or an ICP song like "I Stab People" I know that they are just kidding around. And Everybody got so mad at Eminem's lyrics in "Kill You" that they didn't even stop and realize that at the end of the song he says "I'm just playin America, I love You" or something along those lines.

I also think it depends on the individual who is subjected to the lyrical content of a rap album, (even though not all rap is bad) it depends on there age, and possiably even there mental stability. I for one would not hand my 6 year old sister my Insane Clown Posse CD Collection (I have them all w00t w00t!, lol), instead I burned her a copy of my t.A.t.U. CD. I think that if an older child is still impreshinable they should be monitared on what that they listen to, as they may not be aware when a certin lyricist is serious or not.

I would also like to add that I am against censorship, wether it be on the internet, movies, in movies, or in print. On the other hand I support Parental Advisory stickers on albums, but only as a means of parents and legal guardians to be aware of what their children are listen to. I am against letting these Parental Advisory stickers stopping, 16, 15, and even 14 year olds from buying records.

One more thing, if anybody who is a member or a guest reading this, and you have a website. GoHere, it is an anti-Internet censorship site, sign up and carry the folling banner on your site:

Excellent response by Jay!

I agree. Rap songs, even though I do not like them, should not be censored for content. This is the scenario when the government begins to dictate morality to the population. That's not the government's job. It is the parents' job to regulate what their children watch/read/listen to. Those kind of songs are not meant for children to hear, anyway. Although, if someone were to a listen to a song that ultimately made him act a certain way (he goes out and begins treating women like objects), I would not blame the song. It's the dude's fault for being too stupid to figure out how to behave for himself and going to a rap song to tell him how to be.
