Guillermo Del Toro to make Heaven Sent based on DC's Justice League Dark?!

(file this under gossip/rumors for now)

Guillermo del Toro has responded to rumours that he has been offered the chance to make a Warner Bros movie bringing together many of DC Comics' supernatural heroes.

The project was said to be called Heaven Sent and would feature Deadman, The Spectre, Swamp Thing, Constantine Hellblazer, Phantom Stranger, Zatanna Zatara, Sargon and Etrigan the Demon.

It would be similar to the existing occult team Justice League Dark, a comic book title unveiled in June 2011.

According to Latino Review, Warner Bros lawyers are now trying to clear the rights to all these characters.

And although it was suggested elsewhere that del Toro dismissed the rumour, he posted on his forum (http://www.deltorofilms.com/wp/forum...p=13608#p13608) that he had been referring to the regular Justice League (featuring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc) and was excited by the suggestion of a Heaven Sent film.

He said: "I denied being involved in JLA but this I would love to do!"

It's obvious that Warner Bros might want to make good use of the filmmaker's talents - and his often-mentioned love of monsters - because of the good buzz surrounding the studio's upcoming Pacific Rim which del Toro has directed for release on July 12, 2013.

On the downside, most of the characters in Heaven Sent are unknown to the mainstream. Some have had previous exposure - Swamp Thing was adapted into two films in the 80s and a 90s TV series, a Constantine film starring Keanu Reeves was released in 2005 and Zatanna popped up in a few Smallville episodes - but the others would be new to the screen.

Nevertheless, Heaven Sent is a cool idea and one for which del Toro would be well suited, although it does sound a little like WB is frantically trying to grab a slice of Avengers-style team-up success at the box office.

But, unlike Avengers, there hasn't been a tantalising build-up of solo movies introducing these supernatural beings before they unite for an epic adventure. Only time will tell if this fanboy dream turns into something solid.
