Rock Instrumental Classics

Having talked about classic rock and the 50s today, I got to thinking about one of my favorite types of music, those rock instrumentals from the 50s and 60s. Three categories of favorites:

The Ventures

Out Of Limits
War Of The Satellites
Solar Race
The Fourth Dimension
Damaged Goods

The 1950s (suitable for Stephen King's Christine)

Rebel Rouser - Duane Eddy
Rumble - Link Wray
Harlem Nocturne - The Viscounts
Sleep Walk - Santo And Johnny

The 1960s Surf Music

Pipeline - The Chantays
Mr. Moto - The Belairs
Miserlou - Dick Dale
Penetration - The Pyramids
Underwater - The Frogmen

What Rock Instrumental pieces do you like?

Pretty much everything you just listed. That was a pretty big chunk of it. To further get into Link Wray a little bit... I think he was the King of instrumentals. He also had a great voice. I heard the reason he rarely sang was because he had only the use of 1 lung or something like that. Some argue that he was what started punk rock. After listening to some of his early stuff, I'd have to agree.

Just to throw out 2 sub genres... Surf instrumentals and Psychedelic instrumentals have always appealed to me.

You'll also find a lot of no hit wonder garage bands that play a lot of brilliant, but unheard instrumentals. Garage music from the mid 60's is just fantastic. It's usually very fuzzy and brash at the same time.

Pure hormones.

On a side note... how do you embed youtube videos into posts? All the other forums I visit have a youtube icon, or a film reel you can click that allows you to insert a youtube link. I haven't found that while posting.

I LOVE surf music! What would be an example of psychedelic instrumental (I'm not sure I'm familiar with it)?

As for youtube videos, I've just been copying and pasting links. Sorry, I'm really hopeless with computers (someone else will probably write and tell you how to do it).

No worries about the youtube thing. :)

Here's a pretty fun example of psychedelic.

You'll notice a lot of tambourines, hard drumming, and kind of a garage sound. Garage music is pretty cool because you could have had a Surf Garage band, Psychedelic, or Punk... but Punk was a bit later into the 70's, rather than the 60's. I prefer Garage music of the mid to late 60's.

This one actually has vocals. It's a pretty cool sounding song. The best part about Garage music whether it be S or P in style, is its all pretty damned obscure. In other words we don't have to worry about hipsters catching on and ruining it. ;) lol

My favorite thing to do is drive around in my old '67 MGB GT with psychedelic music blaring... just cruising down old dirt roads around here. I'm a dork like that...

The original version of Out of Limits was actually by The Mar-Ketts. They had a truly unique sound.

A great instrumental is Hocus Pocus by Focus. Hmmm... maybe it doesn't count since it has yodelling.

There are so many great rock instrumentals my brain won't even think of any right now. Most bands in the 60s and 70s had at least one per album.

Wacked Out Guitars

I can see I am going to enjoy this BB. Most of my favorite things to discuss are here.
There was a Radio (WFMU) DJ in E Orange NJ in the 80's-90's who regularly played obscure instrumentals from the era. Check out his contributions at

Oh yes, I know The Marketts did the original version of Out Of Limits, but I always preferred The Ventures version.

My father had the album Ventures In Space which I used to listen to all the time when I was little, and seem to love it more and more the older I get.

I LOVE Hocus Pocus (and yes, I do sing along):o
