New to the Forum - Looking for movie recommendations

After spending a couple years trolling the horrorwatch.com forums, I wondered what else was out there and google led me to you guys and girls! :D

- My friends and I caught Last House on the Left last weekend and it was pretty entertaining...over the top violence, nudity but with a serious and disturbing feel to it...Conversly, that night we also watched Ft13th Part 2, which is a movie I really enjoy because its also over the top with violence, nudity but obviously has a more aloof atmosphere.

Sooo,
My first question for this forum should be an easy one:

What are some recommendations for each of those :)

Good question, as both movies have a violent nature to them but are completely different in tone, as you point out.

If you want something in the vein of LHOTL I recommend the original inspiration for that film (according to Craven himself) Virgin Spring (1960). This film is excellent and I believe Criterion has a great version of it out now. Another movie I recommend actually stars David Hess as a similar character - The House on the Edge of the Park (1980), with a similar feel and title. In that same atmosphere, including parental revenge, I have to mention Night Train Murders (1975).

Now, nothing can quite capture any 1st or 20th viewing of Friday 13 I and II but I had a lot of fun with a recent movie to come about by the title of Hatchet (2006). The nudity level was medium, but a few of the death sequences were very old school and the aloofness (in disguise as humour) is there. Of course there are always the modern slasher classics like Halloween (Zombies version is definately aloof and has some nudity, but not quite the spirit of Carpenter's), and Nightmare on Elm Street (somewhat slasherish). Lastly take a look at one of the original body count films by one of the greatest in the Horror field (IMHO anyway): Bava's Blood and Black Lace (1964).

I think this is my first answer on the board to a question not related to my intro, as I am new too and it was fun to put my ideas out there. What do others think?

Cinestro - Thanks for the reply- I will check out Virgin Spring, The House on the Edge of the Park and Night Train Murders for the old school fix - There's something endearing about the oldies.

I've read alot about Hatchet thru reviews and user comments on Amazon and it definitely seems like one to watch. Zombie's Halloween turned Carpenters vision on its head - Methodical Michael became much more of a savage maniac - I've never heard of Blood and Black Lace, but I'll check that out as well.

Check out our top 100 lists, there are plenty of great recommendations on there. They are on top in the general forum. As for slashers, you should watch Bay of Blood (AKA: Twitch of the Death Nerve) which has inspired (The Friday the 13th even took some almost shot for shot) some great kills. Post often, don't spam, and use protection.

Welcome

Enjoy the forums. I recommend Hatchet. It is similar to Friday the 13th in the "legend" killing spree. It is not as well done as the 13th, but it was a good movie.

Well I am new here too and this is my first post but I would like to suggest a few movies, Hostel, Dead Alive and Bad Taste just for the gore, Cannibal Holocost ( bad stuff there) Slaughter Hotel is a sleazy flick, Intrails of a Virgin is pretty nasty too. Hope I helped you out some and hope you like my taste.
