In my mind, including aliens is kind of lazy writing. Aliens can do anything, so if you need something to happen, that couldn't possibly happen in real life, throwing an alien in there makes it plausible.

I fully realize this is flawed logic, and my rational mind tells me that, but I can't help it.

Aliens in scifi or outer space = ok

Aliens on earth interfering in human affairs = dumb
I think aliens are always possible. It's like the what's over the hill story. It's just a matter of getting over the hill. There were a lot of good sci-fi stories from that time period. I'm still catching up on a bunch. I saw a good Twilight Zone about a year or so ago about aliens in a bar.
