For the most part, they are a myth. With the exception of executions, soldiers getting killed, etc.there is actually no record of real snuff films (and, technically, those exceptions, as well as animal deaths are not really snuff films anyway). It is believed that the origin of the myth started with what someone said about the Manson murders, in an interview or something, of course, there were none by them found. The idea reached its height in the 1970s with a film called Snuff. The film was made (under a different title) and was quite terrible (And was performing equally terribly). Consequently, the filmmakers decided to add a scene that they claimed was a real death scene, in order to make the film more successful. The scene obviously was not a real death, but the fact that they claimed that made people want to see it. It then became a big hit. So, in short, I do not believe snuff films truly exist.
