Four good actors in two bad movies... Hoffman and Beatty in Ishtar; and Nicholson and Meryl Streep in Ironweed. When a dark, cold and depressing movie is also bad... it's really a bad time.
Nich and Streep both got best actor nominations for it. Interesting too, they were both 1987.
