Don't neglect the classics. THE WOLF MAN (1941) with Lon Chaney, Jr. and Robert Wise's THE HAUNTING (1963) are a couple of good places to start. I'd also recommend THE OMEN with Gregory Peck (if the film doesn't frighten you the extremely creepy theme by Jerry Goldsmith will) and Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING (1980) as films well worth your while.
