I don't know what tv show this was but the first paragraph sounds like it could have been influenced by a very creepy story called "The Humgoo" by R. Chetwynd-Hayes from his collection THE MONSTER CLUB. The second paragraph sounds similar to "He'll Come Knocking At Your Door", a very bizarre frightening story by Robert R. McCammon. Even if these are not the inspiration for the show you're looking for they're well worth reading if you ever come across them. Beware the McCammon, the ending is like nothing I've ever read before.
