Valerie (Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie's older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Oldman), to help them kill the wolf. But Solomon's arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon... Phantom's Review: I gotta be honest with you, I really didn't know what to expect from this film when we watched it. Was it going to be a "Wolfman" style "guts and gore" horror flick? Or some sort of lame "Twilight" type of film. Much to my surprise, the film seemed to follow a murder mystery type of format with almost the entire village locked behind walls and the werewolf is someone on the inside. You get a bunch of suspects to choose from and the director leads you in different directions as you try and figure it out. The film is beautifully shot and is surprisingly good, both in story and acting.
The romance angle is a little cliche', but the ending is interesting. Overall, I liked it.
