'The success of Dead of Night -- due to the strength of the stories and the effectiveness of the ominous mood -- set the stage for a flood of British anthologies to come. '
As far as I remember Dead of Night was the first British Horror movie to be made after the war. During WWII Britain totally suppressed the making and distribution of the genre as they thought it was bad for public morale.
I would say this also added to its success.
