Actually...You add the apostrophe at the END of a word to show possession IF the word is ALSO plural, and as most plural words DO tend to end with the letter "s"...It does look that way....
ie:.....bear's.....possessive...belonging to a bear
.........bears......plural...more than one bear
.........bears'.....plural AND possessive...belonging to more than one bear:)
