While I am fairly bewildered by the need to remake martyrs, I can't say I completely hate the idea. Martyrs was a great flick (a perfect example of putting your protagonist through hell), but if they are willing to keep from pulling punches I imagine that they could make something positive from this endeavor.
My thinking is while the ending of the original left me a bit confused (in a good way), but if the give it a positive ending, it could really be an Alfred Hitchcock way of doing it by creating a sense of "relief" (though the ideas behind that and a "less depressing" ending might not collide).
My fear is the thought that they will pull a lot of the punches that made the first movie fairly disturbing/interesting. In the scene where Lucie starts unloading with a shot gun, while extremely violent and unforgiving, also says a lot about her mental state. It also takes away the feeling of sympathy the opening tried to garner from you (something I don't see in a lot of films).
Now, it isn't really fair to just put the word "remake" with "suck". A lot of movies that are thought of as future classics are remakes, such as Scarface, The Departed, Ben-Hur, Cape Fear, and more.
