It's a hell of a lot of fun to build a little dirt hut to protect yourself from zombies and move into full swing as the last man left alive with all the mining... iron smelting... and castle building you need to protect yourself. Multiplayer's fun too, building towns and cities with people is a blast.
Oh, and It's not free (it's like 9.99 Euros) but there's a free version available without a lot of cool stuff added.
