SLW, I believe that 'The Phantom' is a worldwide comic hero favorite. The U.S. just never got it like everyone else apparently does. I actually liked (and own) a copy of the Billy Zane flick from the 80's(?).
I also understand that the purple suit was a mistake of the printer's. It was supposed to be gray.
