Way, Way, Way to much CGI effects today.
A good example is Kingdom Of The Spiders & Tarantula which used real spiders.

Eight Legged Freaks uses CGI effects. To me it's way overdone and monotonous.
A good example where CGI was used properly was the two TV miniseries "V" and "V- The Final Battle". The Jurassic Park films weren't to bad either.

CGI if used properly can be most effective & enjoying.
Give me Ray Harryhausen and his stop motion effects please!
By the way the scene in Jason & The Argonauts whereby the Argonats fight the skeletal army near the end of the film took 33 days. Today it would be done in a much shorter time period. However, it looked very realistic.

The 1953 War Of The Worlds had spetacular special effects way ahead of it's time and way before CGI.

Again, I think CGI is great, if it is used reasonably and not overdone. Unfortunately today it is.
