Because he is inherently evil and an inner force drives him to kill off his family. That, and the fact to set up that he is insane. Carpenter didn't decide Curtis would be his younger sister until the sequel.

Females are usually always the killer's protagonist at the end of the movie and survive. This is because the killer is usually male and females help portray the underdog, weak person that overcomes the Goliath killer in the end.

Black people always die first and I can't think of any gay characters in major horror movies. What civil rights? lol
