Could be that the modem you're using is set to be configured with only wired or wireless connection, not both? So go to the webpage of the modem where you can make changes etc, and see if that's the case.
There is also sometimes a universal reset button on the modem like in a pinhole type thing, do that with the cable in and it might pick it up?
The cable currently works on other devices I take it?
