Brother (1997). On the surface this is a sublime though done-on-the-cheap Russian crime drama. But Russian is far from superficial. On the deep this is about a culture suffering from an identity crisis, a crisis that was imbued with a Darwinian power struggled from the fall of communism. Fresh from martial dealings with the Chechnyans, this is about a Russia looking to branch out towards the West without losing its own identify. The effect is social bedlam. The acting was awesome, with competent direction and camera work. The story itself was solid, told in a fashion that was refreshing in that every nuance did not require a crayoned out explanation to the audience. This was simply a tale of a not so simple culture.
