Lovecraft's greatest strength, in my opinion, was the fact that while his writing is often verbose and (
occasionally overly) baroque, his descriptions of horror were always so wonderfully restrained, leaving the readers' minds to create things far more terrifying than words could express. Even more so because of his otherwise wordiness, I think. Anyway, it's something we really take for granted today when it comes to horror.
Good stuff, Lovecraft.
