i remember watching a program on IFC called "The American Nightmare" directed by Adam Simon. It was a documentary sort of show that they aired around Halloween a couple years back. In the program they interviewed many different people including Romero, Cronenberg, Craven, Carpenter, Savini, Tobe Hooper and an assortment of critics and professors.... anyhoo, Hooper stated that he got the idea for TCM (aside from Ed Gein's story) while he was in the hardware department of a store during the Christmas season; there were tons of people (as there usually is that time of year) and he wondered what would be the fastest way to get out of the store... then he noticed the chainsaws. Voila, there was (part of) the inspiration for one of the most controversial horror movies ever made.

Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrasment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life.
But why would I want to do a thing like that?
