The fact that most of the murders are shown after the fact with the sounds lightly played over the slow motion view of the aftermath is what really does it for me. It forces the viewer to imagine what transpired and as anyone into horror knows, the viewer's imagination will always trump having the scene played out for you.
It still blows me away that Siskel & Ebert called it "a powerful and important film, brilliantly acted and directed." It's really not a film you would expect mainstream critics to back at all.
