I hate when people say that. Everything is for the reader to interpret. It goes without saying what you write is for the reader to interpret, but writers of so-called literary fiction enjoy creating ambiguity to sound cool. That person should have just said "I want to be like Raymond Carver, but I'm not smart enough to communicate."
